Best Commercial Project (Large) Nomination

Ceramic Tile Merchants have been involved in the supply of tiles, adhesives and grouts for bathroom pods destined for a large build in Chester, the Hotel Indigo.

There were 71 bathroom pods installed in total equating to over 1,000 m2 of tiling. This project has been a great success because of the partnership formed between the client and ourselves. Evident was the need for good communication, reliable organisation and ensuring the logistics required to complete the project in the required timescale.

The project designer has created a contemporary yet classic feel to the bathrooms by using the Herringbone pattern on the feature walls. This strong geometric pattern has stood the test of time as historically it was used by the Romans to build roads. This iconic tile arrangement defines the style of the design scheme in both bathrooms. The intrinsic diagonal nature of the pattern caused some technical difficulties in the setting out of the shower walls. Especially challenging were the internal corners and the edge adjacent to the shower screen. This wall needed to finish off with full tiles so that the corners could be cut to achieve a straight edge above the half tiled area.

Bathroom design 1

The grey bathroom has a distinctly vintage look. The feature wall in the herringbone has been split into contrasting greys, Masia Gris Oscuro and Masia Gris Claro manufactured by Equipe, the colour change and use of an elongated rectangle( 75x300mm) serve to accentuate the angular pattern. The half tiling on the opposite wall is in a stacked formation and is finished along the top by the contrasting Negro London moulding (50x300mm) which reinforces the vintage aspect. The satin finish floor tile Devonstone (331x331mm) produced by BCT, features a tracery pattern and the grey Victorian motif on a stone background weaves into a complex repeating pattern and has a profound impact in a small area. The design is rooted in tradition and these tiles work harmoniously with the Art Deco style mirrors and wall lights.

Bathroom design 2

The green bathroom has a more natural ambiance. The feature wall behind the bath is fully tiled in the herringbone figure in Decocer Devon Olive Gloss. The half tiling on the other walls is in a stacked formation in Masia Gris Claro with the contrasting black London border which co-ordinates with the retro mirrors and wall lights. The floor has been tiled in a natural wood plank, Fusion Brown Anti-Slip (150x750mm)  capturing the aspect of an innate woodland clearing. The simple clean lines of the wash basin unit further adds to the unsophisticated demeanor of the room. The achievement of this relaxing back-to-nature space, is a triumph in design.

The bathroom designs both compliment the simple contemporary style of the hotel and we are pleased to have been working partners in this stunning project.
