Mechanics of underfloor heating

24th February 2015

Underfloor heating is an electric system which runs off the RCD from your standard electricity supply. It consists of three separate products, all of which are sold by Ceramic Tile Merchants, providing a complete flooring system for your room.

In order to fully insulate your floor and give your underfloor heating system the best possible chance of having the best possible effect, you will need to install insulation boards. These provide a subfloor for tiling, and are available in 6mm and 10mm thicknesses. The cement-style outer coating protects a polystyrene core which provides effective insulation, and cuts heating time down from one hour to just 30 minutes. They are easily attached to concrete floors, using tile adhesive or screws.

Once your insulation boards are down, you need to lay your underfloor heating mat, which incorporates Tefzel insulation technology and can cope with temperatures up to 200C. The mat is made from toughened fibreglass and contains a 3m connection cable. It is just 2.1mm thick and is fixed using three adhesive strips, making it extremely easy to administer.

Underfloor heating can be used without the need for other radiators in your room, but you will need to take into account the size of your room in comparison to the area you want to be heated. Ceramic Tile Merchants can give you free advice on this, and any other aspect of your underfloor heating system, so give us a call today or pop in to see us on Grovehill Road in Beverley.

The final piece of the underfloor heating jigsaw is a thermostat, which will control the temperature and timings of your system. It has an intelligent touch screen control, six daily settings and a manual on/off switch. It also comes with a two-year guarantee for your peace of mind.
