Residential Property Project Shortlisted For Industry Award

Ceramic Tile Merchants are delighted to have worked very closely on a local domestic project where our customers had a clear vision to create the interior decor of their home in the minimalist style. The proposed scheme was a huge undertaking as it included a full refurbishment and additional large extension. They wanted to create a living space which had a focus on simplicity, clean lines, uncluttered space and the use of natural materials.

The open plan nature of the building lent itself perfectly to this design concept, 'minimalism in interior design means spacious rooms with minimum of furniture and details. The main element of this style is attention to shape, colour and texture. In modern minimalism design accent is made on sharp geometric shapes and asymmetry. Shape prevails over purpose. Furniture must have streamline shapes and upholstered with neutral coloured leather. Shiny surfaces and straight lines look amazing in this interior. Details should be made of stainless steel or chrome. The amount of accessories should be minimal. The floor should be made of materials that are easy to clean and take care of - wood, linoleum or stone tile.' (homeimprovement.over-blog.com)

The kitchen is a magnificent tribute to the modern contemporary look, with the glossy kitchen units in graphite grey fitted with square shaped steel handles which echo the square panels of the doors. The central island is functional and stylish with its oval end cupboards and smart matching grey and chrome bar stools. The lustrous pearl work surface sweeps around the room with chic simplicity. The strikingly marked stoneware porcelain tile, Icon Oyster 1200x600 unites the whole ground floor living space, the polished finish enhances the beauty of the stone, both complementing the kitchen and the adjacent sitting area.

The hallway utilises natural elements and showcases a dramatic feature wall in black split face slate. The neutral tones of the light oak floor and unembellished doors serve to augment the honesty of the design. The glass balcony above adds an understated elegance to the space.

The bathroom is an example of when functionality marries perfectly together with the beauty of stone. 'Amelia White' from the Tileworks range by Original Style has been used on both wall and floor, the veining effect and matt glaze give the product an alluring natural finish and the sharp rectified edges adhere to the contemporary feel of the design .The square chrome wall mounted towel rail and the square shaped powder coated steel window both serve to amplify the strong sense of form in the room.

The shower room has hints of the Scandinavian style of interior design bringing into play the earthy tones of 'Madagascar Natural' tiles. The ripples in the feature panel are reminiscent of the wavelike shapes which form when the wind blows over the sand on the beach and give the room a very organic feel. The natural essence of the room is further emphasised by the use of matching floor mosaics, cleverly forming the base of the shower cubicle with the installation of a clear shower screen giving a feeling of infinity.

The finished project is a success story in the realisation of an idea, by using neutral colour palettes and natural materials to create a home environment with a focus on simplicity, minimalism and functionality.
