Tile Pitfalls to Avoid

18th January 2018

Here at Ceramic Tile Merchants we want to ensure you enjoy your tiles for many years to come, but there are some things to bare in mind when choosing & installing your new tiles.

Buy them all at the same time

Much like paint or wallpaper, there can be slight variations in the finish of tiles from batch to batch. Both changes in atmospheric pressure and humidity can slightly affect the colour of the tiles once fired. For this reason, it's wise to buy all the tiles you will need at once.

When it comes to tiling however, we recommend mixing tiles from different boxes to ensure you end up with a consistent look once all the tiles have been laid.

Keep some spare tiles

In case you change some element of your kitchen or bathroom (think, you install a lovely new bath) it's worth keeping some spare tiles in case you need to add some more or some get damaged.

Store these in the original packaging off the floor to keep them protected from water and dust.

Choose the right floor tiles

Glazed floor tiles are measured for the hardness of the glaze, which determines their intended use. They are measured to European standards called PEI grades.

All glazed floor tiles are measured for the hardness of the glaze according to European Standards called PEI grades:

  • PEI 1 is a wall tile, which isn't suitable for floors
  • PEI 2 is suitable for light traffic only, like bathrooms
  • PEI 3 is suitable for most domestic uses, like kitchens, conservatories, but not main entrances
  • PEI 4 is suitable for all domestic and medium commercial use, like more shops and showrooms
  • PEI 5 is for all domestic & commercial uses, and can be used almost anywhere you like
